Excerpt 1 Just ahead of them walked a group of boys, most of them about sixteen years old or so. The boys laughed loudly and Sam, the school’s star soccer player and heart-throb, looked back at them. “Silly louts,” said Phapo, “Nurse Dora says they pretend to love you, but they are lying. They hop from girl to girl.” “That’s not true! Sam really loves me. He always buys me food, and he also promised to buy me shoes. And jewellery!” the older girl protested. “He is going to give you Aids!” Phapo said.
“What do you know? You are just a spring chicken!” Dimakatso snorted.

“Sabata says I am pretty,” Phapo said, moving closer to her grandma who smelled of snuff. Grandma looked at her for a long time. When she talked, her voice was as comforting as a blanket when you were cold. “Come and sit with me so that I can braid the sun into your hair.” Phapo sat cross-legged in front of her grandma. “Child who is the apple of my eye, today you must know. I will tell you. I will tell you about the perfect fruit.” “A fruit?” Phapo asked. “Yes. Inside you is a precious fruit, the fruit of virginity. You alone can decide to cherish the fruit inside you. You alone can decide to destroy the fruit inside you.”

“Oh, I know! I know! Grandma told me!” Phapo cried excitedly. “I must cherish the fruit inside me. I must say NO when a boy wants to take my fruit.” “That’s right. You should keep the fruit for the man you are going to marry one day. If you give a taste of your fruit to every man who wants some of it, it gets bruised and you can get Aids,” Nurse Dora replied ….
