Introducing 1001 Inventions, a book to help us Discover the Muslim Heritage in our World... It will help us to experience a thousand years of missing history, learn about a lost age of Muslim innovation and invention to discover the Muslim origins of many Western discoveries.

There’s a big gap in the teaching of the History & Science of Civilisations. In most education systems, the Greek & Roman civilizations are covered, which takes us up to the 5th century, then we are told that there were the “Dark Ages,” and then suddenly there is a revival in the 16th century with the Renaissance. The question is, what happened in between? Did modern civilisation really rise from nothing?

It is, actually, a historical fact that scientific discovery was happening in the Muslim world during these 1000 years. We believe that for students to have a more complete sense of the histories of civilizations, that this should be taught to them.

Brought to you by the makers of Muslim Heritage, 1001 Inventions is a groundbreaking global educational initiative exploring the Muslim contributions to building the foundations of Modern Civilisation.

It is a unique UK based educational project that reveals the rich heritage that the Muslim community share with other communities in the UK, Europe and across the World. It is a non-religious and non-political project seeking to allow the positive aspects of progress in science and technology to act as a bridge in understanding the interdependence of communities throughout human history.

1001 Inventions is a groundbreaking global educational initiative exploring the Muslim contributions to building the foundations of Modern Civilisation. It consists of a UK and world wide travelling exhibition, a colourful easy to read book, a dedicated website and a themed collection of educational posters complementing a secondary school teachers' pack and a curriculum enrichment programme.

From the 8th Century, Muslim tradition and culture set trends in eating, music and style that still influence us today. Their experiments, discoveries and inventions with liquids, light and time opened the door to myriad new chemical compounds, measurements of time in precise and minute detail and devices used in space observation and deep sea exploration.

Examples:

Al-Jazari's water powered scribe clock brought back to life after 800 years. This fascinating water powered portable clock stands 1 metre high and half a metre wide. The scribe with his pen is synonymous to the hour hand of a modern clock. This is yet another example of an ingenious water system by al-Jazari.

The water raising machines that were developed by the Muslims 800 years ago. They devised new techniques to catch the water and made ingenious combinations of available devices, drawing on their own knowledge and that of other civilizations.

Piri Re’is, a Turkish captain, created a map in 1513 which has come to be known as the famous ‘Map of America’. This astonishing map clearly shows Antarctica, as well as the Andes Mountains of South America. Both of these were ‘first seen’ years after this map was created in 1513.

The Book
1001bookOver 350 pages of colour photographs and written in an accessible style for those with limited knowledge of either Islam or history.

Adam Hart-Davis; Photographer, Writer and TV Science Presenter of BBC Series ‘What the Ancients Did for Us’. Said this about the book:
"This glorious book overflows with the great ideas of the Muslim middle ages. From al-Jazari and his elephant clocks and al-Kindi and Ibn al-Haitham with their revolutionary optical theories.”

10 Educational Posters in all!

There is also a free downloadable Teacher’s Pack which can be used in conjunction with our Curriculum Enrichment Programme, which has been devised to support teachers and the classroom environment. Includes science activities for 11-16 year olds for the Science National Curriculum. It maps relevant historical Islamic scientific and technological discoveries and principles to the national curriculum for secondary schools.

The books and posters are a great resource to bring together Muslims and Non-Muslims seeking to advance Civilisation through the study of Muslim Heritage.

They aim to raise global awareness on the importance and relevance of Muslim Heritage and its mostly unaccounted contribution to current world civilisation
